Cimarron Council of the Boy Scouts Great Southern Plains Rendezvous

    Members of Saltfork:
We have been invited to again participate in the Cimarron Council of the Boy Scouts Great Southern Plains Rendezvous (GSPR); this is a large event drawing 100’s of scouts, adult leaders, and vendors such as the Coleman Company. It is scheduled for the weekend of April 13-15, 2012 (at Williams Scout Ranch, Enid, Oklahoma). Saltfork participation in this event is a good opportunity for our membership to share the smithin’ craft with this group of young people and Scout leaders.

Levi Rutledge & I have been demo smiths at this event; Saltfork member Fred Voss has also done this event several times (see the May ‘09 SF Newsletter, 7.75mb pdf file, for Fred’s report). Levi & I showed up about the middle of Friday afternoon to set up a couple of tents and our forges. We had our fires going and a crowd well before supper time that evening. All in all Saltfork members have had a really good time at this event, were extremely well fed, and made many new friends.

I hope several more of you can join us for any of the three days. Bring your portable forge, tools, and some project steel. Or just show up and share our fire and tools. If you want to camp out, that will be OK too; there is plenty of room in this well equipped area. You should plan to provide your own meal on Friday evening.

The Williams Scout Ranch is located off of Highway 412 twenty six and 1/2 miles west of the Super Wal-Mart in Enid or 3 miles east of the Hwy 8 / Hwy 412 intersection – Cleo Springs-Aline turnoff. Look for a large radio tower on the N. side of Hwy 412 and a Williams Scout Ranch sign with an arrow pointing south. Turn south down this road for about 3 miles and veer left following the signs to the GSPR event site.

John (JB) Mingus is the Scout Leader contact for this event.
